Meal box schemes a convenient way to avoid convenience food? Uses and understandings of meal box schemes among Danish consumers
Professor Bente Halkier has co-authored the article 'Meal box schemes a convenient way to avoid convenience food? Uses and understandings of meal box schemes among Danish consumers' with her colleague Frej Hertz. The publication is based on the research they made for the EU-project 'Food, Convenience and Sustainability' on convenience food from 4 different countries.
In this article Bente Halkier and Frej Hertz argue that convenient food is not just the average classical ready meals and take-away, which are often considered less healthy and not 'proper food'. The market for convenient food provisioning has diversified, and one of the new contenders are meal box schemes. The article shows how Danish parents who subscribe to meal boxes are enabled to claim that they cook meals from scratch, and thus living up to a still widely shared social everyday life ideal about home-made family meals – but just doing it in a much more convenient and thus do-able manner in time-squeezed family lives.
